Barry Schaefer is a hobbyist blacksmith with over 25 years of experience in blacksmithing. He works with both propane and coal forges to create custom-built ironwork including hinges, hardware, door pulls, bed frames, railway spike knives, candelabras, blacksmith tools, gates and railings, and...

Barry was originally drawn to blacksmithing by the rustic qualities of wrought tools and the self-sufficiency that they offer. With time, this original interest has expanded to include education. He not only teaches basic, intermediate and advanced blacksmithing lessons, but he also enjoys working with schools and community organizations to teach understanding of this time-honoured craft.

You can often find Barry doing public demonstrations. Each year at the Prince George BCNE, he can be found in the Blacksmith shop. He also is a regular at the Railroad and Forestry Museum event days now that they have built him a blacksmith shop.

Barry also started a Blacksmith Guild, which is now held monthly at the Prince George Railroad and Forestry Museum (last Saturday of every month at 10am). Newcomers and backyard blacksmiths are all welcome to come and ask their questions and learn new techniques!

If you would like more information on ordering custom-built ironwork, attending the Blacksmith Guild, arranging for private lessons, or school and community demonstrations, please contact Barry.
